Freelance, marketplace or agency: three ways to hire UK sales talent, honestly compared

There are really only three ways to bring in a UK sales closer, setter or SDR: hire a freelancer directly, use a vetted marketplace, or engage a recruitment agency. Each trades a different mix of cost, speed, quality and control.

Route 1 — freelance platforms

Cheapest on the surface — no placement fee, no marketplace cut. Most expensive when you count the hours you spend filtering unqualified applicants, the deals lost to a bad hire, and the fact that serious closers rarely live on general freelance platforms.

Right when you already know what a good closer looks like for your offer, have a scorecard, and can run trials yourself. Wrong when you are a first-time hirer.

Route 2 — a vetted marketplace (PrimeClosers)

You get pre-filtered talent (AI assessment, DISC, Loom, team review) and you run the interview yourself. Placement fee is a flat £249 with no recruiter commission and no retainer.

Right when you want speed and quality without paying agency prices, and when you want to keep control of the interview. Wrong if you genuinely have no time to interview at all — in which case use Managed Placement.

Route 3 — recruitment agencies

Highest cost by a large margin — typical UK sales agency fee is 20–25% of first-year OTE, often £8k–£20k on a closer seat. You do less work but pay for it. Quality varies enormously by agency and by the individual recruiter on your account.

Right when you are hiring a senior seat (Head of Sales, VP Sales) and want a shortlist headhunted from named competitors. Overkill for a first closer or SDR.

Cost side by side, roughly

Freelance platform: £0 fee, 30–40 hours of your time filtering, high bad-hire risk. Marketplace: £249–£497 per hire, 5–8 hours of your time on interviews, low bad-hire risk. Agency: £8k–£20k per hire, 3 hours of your time, low bad-hire risk when done right.

For most UK founders under £3M ARR, the marketplace route is the honest best value. Above £3M ARR and hiring exec seats, the agency route earns its fee.
